A place called winter5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() "I must confess I was afraid that tanks and armoured personnel carriers, so necessary in the war zone, would be driven across Red Square," wrote the well-known military correspondent Alexander Kots. It reflects the tone on Russia's nationalist telegram channels. "It makes sense as a lot of the vehicles are needed in Ukraine," Artyom told us. ![]() The onlookers we met, once they'd found a viewing spot at last, seemed sanguine about the reduced programme. The full drive-by took just five minutes, with the air show cancelled long in advance of Victory Day itself. Muscovites could catch the parade as it drove out of Red Square, but there wasn't much of one to speak of - just over 50 pieces of military hardware, the only tank on display the historic T-34 "Victory Tank" from the Second World War. Normally, foreign media are accredited to film there too, but not this year. ![]() ![]() This time round the only real viewing potential was if you were inside Red Square and that is invite only. The flyover is another highlight, with the final flourish always the tricolour Russian flag trailed across the sky.īut this was not a normal Victory Day. Victory Day parades in Russia generally see throngs of people lining the city's main thoroughfares, cheering on the tanks as they pass, the armoured vehicles and S-400 anti-aircraft systems and - the spectator's favourite - the fearsome YARS intercontinental ballistic missile capable of delivering a world-ending nuclear payload across the globe. ![]() While Trujillo’s regime did improve poverty levels and general quality of life in the DR, it also brought a severe decrease in civil liberties and created a fascist state comparable to Hitler’s Germany or Mussolini’s Italy. ![]() His administration swiftly proved to be a military dictatorship that ruthlessly punished political dissenters, scholars, Haitians, and all those who resisted Trujillo’s complete authority in the cultural, social, and economic life of the nation. Rafael Trujillo, called El Jefe, took power over the DR in 1931 through an “election” that was firmly controlled by the Dominican Army. Similar to many countries in Latin America in the 1900s, the Dominican Republic went through years of political upheaval in the process of anti-colonialism and modernization. ![]() As a story of Dominican American characters in the twentieth century, the Trujillo Era in the Dominican Republic looms large over the events of the novel. ![]()

Ashes on the waves by mary lindsey5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I hate thin premises that promise more than they ever intend to deliver. And mark my words, every single fucking chapter starts off with a quotation from a piece of Edgar Allan Poe's writing. It pisses me off, because it feels like the author uses the famed author's name and quotes his works as more of a selling point than any actual relation or tribute to the author himself. And I mean, suckered, since this book is a hot mess with a microscopic connection to Edgar Allan Poe's works. ![]() The premise of the story being based on the poem suckered me in. I absolutely love his writing, particularly his poetry, and Annabel Lee is among my favorite poem among his wide repertoire. I am a proud, card-bearing member of the Edgar Allan Poe bandwagon. This book starts off with a text of Edgar Allan Poe's beloved poem, Annabel Lee. ![]()

I can’t guess how many copies are out there by now. In the original publisher's half cloth over white paper boards binding. Eats, Shoots and Leaves the book The book I was reminded of is called ‘Eats, Shoots And Leaves’ and it was written by Lynne Truss and published in 2003 in the UK. First published in April of 2004, Eats, Shoots and Leaves spent 25 weeks on the NY Times bestseller list and by October of that year had gone back to press 22 times to bring the total of copies in print to a million. With this volume, the author wants to remind our society of the importance of punctuation, often forgotten in this world of Internet, emails, and "txt msgs." A great success in the U.K., it was reprinted in America the following year in 2004.?The dedication to this book reads "To the memory of the striking Bolshevik printers of St Petersburg who, in 1905, demanded to be paid the same rate for punctuation marks as for letters, and thereby directly precipitated the first Russian Revolution."With unclipped dustwrapper. The peach keeper5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Kind of like eating chocolate macaroons for breakfast. So all in all, this is a squishy little bit of nothing. Do thirty-year-olds really confront each other about stupid stuff they did as teenagers? I never attended any of my high school reunions, so I wouldn't know. I couldn't really relate because I pretty much forgot high school slights and disappointments by the time I was about twenty-one. ![]() The story's about four thirty-year-olds who finally come to terms with high school pettiness and decide to get on with their lives. There's not really anything about "peach keeping" in the story except one little thing near the end that feels like it was tossed in to justify the title. Late in the book there's a chapter called "The Joker, the Stick Man, the Princess, and the Freak." That should have been the book's title. ![]() This wasn't terrible, but it lacks that spark of magic Allen's readers have grown to love. ![]()
